A space maintainer is a small appliance that holds open the gap left by a baby tooth that was lost too early. Baby teeth save space for the permanent teeth growing underneath. When one is lost before its time, a space maintainer keeps that space open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
Dr. Raptis takes a scan or impression of your child's teeth. A custom space maintainer is made to fit, either fixed to nearby teeth or removable. At a follow up visit, we place it, check the fit, and show you and your child how to care for it.
Without a space maintainer, nearby teeth can drift into the empty space. That can block the permanent tooth and lead to crowding or a crooked bite. Holding the space open helps your child's adult teeth come in where they belong and may reduce the need for orthodontic treatment later.
